Get ready for a journey of a lifetime to relish the amazing landscape, from lowlands to highland glaciers, waterfalls to avalanches, of the Everest region by taking on the three passes trek. The three passes trek is possibly the most complete trek in Nepal as it covers most of the mesmerizing parts of Everest region. It is more challenging than the EBC trek as it involves traversing through three high passes, from where it got its name, namely Renjo La, Cho La and Khongma La, each over 5000m.
The trek starts from Lukla and follows the classic EBC trail till Namche Bazaar. Here after, the route diverts west splitting from the main trail and heads up to Dudh Koshi Valley. After leaving Namche Bazaar, you walk towards Lungden passing through ancient Sherpa villages like Thame and Thamo. You will encounter the first of the three passes after leaving Lungden, which is the Renjo La Pass at 5370m. Crossing Renjo La will take you to the iconic Gokyo Lake. The trail then turns east towards EBC as you cross the second pass of the trek, Cho La Pass at 5420 m. After crossing Cho La, you will have the opportunity to go to EBC and Kalapatthar where you enjoy the surrounding views. Finally, you cross the third and the final pass of the trek, Khongma La at 5545 m from Lobuche to join the classic EBC trail at Dingboche. Then, you follow the trail and descend down to Lukla, which is the ending point of the trek.
The three passes trek could be a perfect alternative for people trying to avoid the crowded trails of the classic EBC trek. This trek is the ultimate adventure in the Everest region and takes in all the beauty in terms of the views of the mountain and the culture of the Sherpa people. The region is beautiful all year round but it is recommended and best to visit in the autumn season as the skies are clear and everything looks very sharp just like a picture.
